Urban Thistle Farm is a dream come true:

Cultivated by a small group of food justice warriors intent on bringing a local solution to hunger to the Casper Community.

The Farm is in the "food desert" of North Casper.

We work to be a beacon of hope and a vessel for a strong community.

We accomplish our mission through a Food is Free community garden, urban production farm, farmer's markets, job training, and service-learning.

Like all growers, there are items we need to purchase to get the farm growing. They include irrigation supplies, some electrical work, troubleshooting leaks from last year (eeek!), seeds, potting soil, weed barriers, screws, lumber, and more.

Last year the Wyoming Hunger Initiative granted us an infrastructure grant and the day is finally upon us.

This well could not be coming at a more perfect time, with water resources guaranteed to be limited for this, the biggest drought ever recorded.

Our mission remains the same: to create food independence in North Casper to empower a self-reliant community.

Together with your help we can make our community a better place, and embody the Wyoming independence we all love.

Last year our friends at Ireach 2, Inc. helped us start hundreds of seeds that were planted in the community garden. Then, all winter they’ve helped us save and package seeds to sow this summer for pollinators.

- We started to move into our new tool room and build more garden beds,
- We’re finishing up painting our new office and are almost ready to move in!
- We’ve cleared out and started to prime the new coffee shop (name tbd),
- We’ve made huge progress in the canning kitchen to make it fully functional including setting up dry storage,
- Our hydroponics plants are thriving and almost ready to provide food for Project Homeless Connect,
- Finally, our tilapia are settling in to their new home!

We couldn’t have done this without the huge contributions of our AmeriCorps NCCC team, Axolotl 2!!

“Aquaponics is a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water.“

Our aquaponics system is stocked with tilapia who provide our greens above with the fertilizer necessary for their success. The greens 🥬 process the waste to aid in maintaining a safe water environment for the tilapia; creating a mutually beneficial system!

As a season of production comes to a close we are modifying our systems.

The ultimate goal of our work is high yield food production using practices that are based in sustainable and organic growing.

Dome 2 worked very well this season. It was used to harden off seedlings before sowing in outside beds. It grew squash, tomatillos, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, flower, and even potatoes.

We grew in used agricultural mineral tubs and used drip loops and 1/4” spray heads on battery operated valve timers.

The methods we use on the farm are focused on recycled and reused materials and diverting as much as possible from the waste stream.

This winter we are working with 3 former AmeriCorps NCCC members whose time, talents, and energy are like compost to the spirit of our work. They energize us all and make this work so special!

We are not slowing down, even with the changes in weather, and we would love to have you join us any time!

We are so grateful to our community for supporting this vision of food justice, equitable access, and dignity through the Food is Free garden.

We were so fortunate to have Earth 7 @americorpsnccc team on site to truly build the garden from bare earth and @greenbean1_serves who came last summer and finished the work Earth 7 started.

With the many hands of our volunteers including Alan, Sharon, Denise, Mary, Z, Tawni, Jer, Joann, and Steve as well as our friends from IReach, we have had an amazing first summer.

Our donors Rhonda Zimmerman, McMurry Foundation, ANB Bank, and First Interstate Bank, as well as our incredible list of individual donors helped launch this endeavor.
